About

Renee Barnes lectures in online journalism. She regularly writes for The Age and works in the ABC Radio Australia newsroom. Prior to joining RMIT, Renee worked as a journalist for a number of organisations including The Age, ABC Melbourne and Australian Associated Press. Her research interests include the media’s role in the creation and management of national identity narratives, the impact of globalisation on this dynamic, the tabloidisation of online media and online media’s role in giving a voice to those under-represented in the mainstream media.
This blog is an attempt to practice what I teach and join in the circular conversation that is the essence of the online medium.

Hi Renee, nice to stumble across your blog. I’m a journalist in Perth teaching at ECU and about to start a convergence unit next semester combining the print and broadcast streams (we already have an online news unit but it is primarily text based). Would love to hear how you go with your revamp of your online unit.

Hi Renee,
Just a quick email to say thank you for including Flinders Ninjas in your ‘appy new year’ write up. We had a great spike in downloads on the day and three days after the article. The exposure for Millipede (and Melbourne) was incredible. I can’t thank you enough.
We have just released another free game (which we will try to do annually) called Bullistic. As we are a local game dev company, we have so many clients asking could we build a game ‘like Angry Birds’, that we decided that we would.
You can download it here: http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/bullistic/id410442177?mt=8
I hope you enjoy it. Keep up the great work.

Hi Renee,
I stumbled into your blog, which is great, by the way. I recently started a blog so have become a social media fanatic. Granted, I’m not using it as a journalist, but I think it’s still important to think about what SM you use for your particular goal. Good luck with all your research!
